Manufacturing Process of Sustainable Areca Leaf Products

Why Should You Opt For Sustainable Living?

Sustainable living is using as well as reusing the natural resources to the best of their quality. This practice reduces the demand for natural resources. Using natural resources exhaustively has put a burden on the environment, along with its increasing deterioration. In this time of environmental crisis, being a responsible human and following a sustainable lifestyle is one’s responsibility.

There are different ways in which one can follow a sustainable lifestyle. One of the simple things that can be done on a personal level is to try and use products that are not harmful to the environment. Areca palm leaf disposable products are one of the best alternatives for tableware and cutlery that can be used on a personal as well as social level.

Need for using palm leaves disposable plates and bowls: Palm leaves are abundantly available in various parts of South India. Using this already available resource in nature for making disposable plates and bowls is a sustainable, environment-friendly solution. Decomposition of plastic plates and cutlery takes up many decades, thereby increasing the piling waste in the world. There is no space left for piling up such non-degradable waste products. Thus, using areca leaf products such as plates and bowls for food is a good way of contributing towards a better tomorrow.

These palm leaves disposable plates are used for many functions, events, and weddings. People have become more aware of sustainable livelihood and are considering making changes in their events and parties by starting to use environmentally safe and compostable tableware.

Let’s know about how the palm leaf plates are manufactured: When you have known about how these palm leaves disposable plates are replacing the thermocol plates and bowls, you also must have some idea about how exactly these areca leaf products are manufactured. Here is a small glimpse of how the manufacturing process goes about:

Leaves - Palm leaves get dried naturally and fall on the ground. These leaves are collected during the shedding period. It starts in October and ends in May. There is no shedding of leaves during the rainy season. These dried leaves are further processed for making them into usable products.

Sourcing - Sourcing palm leaves is a very important part. Collection of all the dried leaves and gathering them together at one place for processing is very essential. Sourcing is usually done with the help of the community or by direct outbound sources. The fallen leaves are cut and bundled before transporting them to the desired location.

Processing and Storage - Another important part of manufacturing is grading the leaves. The premium-grade leaves are sun-dried and made into bundles before they are stored. Storing of leaves is essential so that enough stock of dried leaves will be available around the year for the manufacturing of palm leaf plates.

Hydro - Pressure Cleaning - Dried leaves are cleaned with high-pressure water. This allows them to remove all small particles, dust, and sand. They are then rested for drying. Washing allows them to induce some moisture in the leaves.

Molding - These moisture-retaining leaves are then allowed to rest for a few hours so that the water in them softens them up. This makes it possible to press and mold the leaves into desired shape and size. Plates, bowls, platter dishes as well as compartment plates with different shapes and sizes ranging from small to large are made using different heated stainless steel dyes. They are then dried so that they retain the desired shape.

Air Cleaning - Air cleaning is a very essential process. The manufacturing process undergoes different stages, where one stage is cleaning. The moisture that is induced helps in shaping the plates, but it also creates a chance of fungal contamination due to moisture. Thus, a proper drying process along with air cleaning is essential to remove any trace amount of moisture as well as any residual matter from the plates.

Sterilization - Sterilization is one of the most crucial processes. To avoid any contamination and growth of any micro-organisms, the palm leaf plates undergo sterilization. It is done at different stages. Heat drying and air cleaning are initial sterilization processes. They also ensure proper quality is maintained. UV treatment for all the areca leaf products is the secondary and final sterilization phase. Once the products are sterilized, they are ready to be sealed and packed.

Sealing and Packing - Stickering is done before sealing the plates. All the products are well-sealed and packed after proper inspection. These packed products are then transferred into cartons and shipped to different locations. These plates are then sold to consumers in markets.

That’s how the entire manufacturing process of making such sustainable, natural, and disposable products takes place. Such easily compostable products are a need of time and one must try to find different ways to make such 100% biodegradable products.

Another best part of the Ecodyne tableware is that they make these tableware products that are microwave safe as well as food safe. This means they would not cause any harmful reaction to food or heat and one can enjoy a delicious meal.

Eventually, it is all about how one person starts making a small change towards living a better life and having a safer and cleaner future. Let’s pledge to start taking small steps on a personal level and adapting to a more sustainable lifestyle.
